Anime Review 2.8 Code Geass R2. (The train-wreck squeal that no one wanted)

Well, folks, it has been a short time but I am now ready to take a look at one of the most notorious anime of all time Code Geass R2.
Code Geass R2 come out at 2008 and ever since it finished airing anime fans were heavily divided on R2.
There are people who called it a masterpiece and saying it’s one of the best anime of all time people despising it with a burning passion and calling it a train-wreck or people wh thought it was okay.
What boat am I in?
For a long, while I use to be a boat where I thought Code Geass R2 was a masterpiece and I thought no anime can top Code Geass R2

However as the years went by as I got older as well as watching more anime and started to buy anime on Blu-Ray/DVD my opinion on certain anime has changed.

For example, I use love Sailor Moon as a kid but after watching more magical girl shows such as Cardcaptor Sakura, Madoka Magica as well as re-watching first season of Sailor Moon again in 2016 I thought the show didn’t hold up well as it has a lot of flaws such as weak episodic story, mediocre characters and lackluster animation that has a lot of stock footage.

Well after recently re-watching Code Geass R2 for the 18th time on DVD from Manga Entertainment in the UK.
Did my opinion of Code Geass R2 change?
Do I think Code Geass R2 is a masterpiece, do I think Code Geass R2 was an okay show or now do I think Code Geass R2 is a train-wreck?
Well, you will find out from this review.
Hello, everyone, this is Shawn aka KurataTrigger and I will be reviewing Code Geass R2 and with that out the let’s begin.

The year is now 2018. It’s been one year since the failure of the black rebellion and the supposed death of Zero. The Black Knights have been defeated by the Britianians. Lelouch is now living a normal life at high school where all of his memories about his sister and him being zero have been completely wiped out. One day Lelouch along with his pseudo brother Rolo decided to go to gambling at the Babel Tower. Soon the black knights lead by C.C Launches an attack on the complex to retrieve Lelouch. She restores Lelouch’s memories allowing him to use Geass to kill his enemies and resume his role as Zero, the masked leader of the Black Knights. Lelouch later finds out that the emperor, his father has altered his memories with Geass as well learning that his sister Nunnally is still alive. Now Lelouch must try to rescue her sister back as well as once again try to defeat the holy britannian empire with the help of the black knights.

The story of Code Geass R2 is honestly not that good. In fact, it’s really bad, especially when coming from R1 which for the most part had a great story that good writing for the most part.
The first half of R2 is mostly a big rehash of R1 where most of the events are taken straight from R1 and they slapped it on to R2. Sure there are differences here and there but a lot of the time I get a huge sense of déjà vu. It also doesn’t help that pacing for the first half was just terrible as it very slow and boring. Not to mention the tone shifts in R2 were unbearable here as the first half of R2 likes to change very quickly from a very serious tone to a more goofy tone. It’s honestly really distracting. In terms of writing, story direction and themes the second half of R2 is absolutely horrendous. It’s like the writers just give up and said screw it let’s just throw shit on the wall and see what’s sticks. From black knights betraying Zero due to them trusting the enemy Schneizal to the whole Sword Of Akasha subplot bullshit which was pretentious as hell.
Not to mention themes and realism are just thrown out the window in favor of people preaching to unrealistic nonsense.
Now am going to list 5 biggest flaws that I have with R2. 5 Major problems of that completely destroyed the show’s quality
1. The school episodes.

The school episodes of R1 while annoying they were actually tolerable to watch for the most part. The school episodes R2 are just awful to watch. Those episodes alone completely butchered to the tone of series and most of those episodes were pointless in the long run.

2. China Arc.

This arc was pain filler. That arc didn’t do anything in the story, it didn’t have a real purpose of existing and everything in that arc gives us nothing but plot holes.
I have nothing more to say about this stupid arc.

3. Cliffhangers

The cliffhangers in R1 were well executed and it manages to make the viewer excited for the next episode just to see what happens next. The cliffhangers in R2 are very hit or mess with some them being good the others are flat out retarded.

4. Plot holes.
Oh my god I have never seen an anime that has this amount of plot holes in my life. Keep in mind I was the same guy who has seen Gundam Seed Destiny, Guilty Crown, Digimon Adventure 02 and Sword Art Online and all of these shows that I just mentioned has a tonne of plot holes. Code Geass R2 has some of the worst plotholes I have ever seen.
Am going to list some of them right now.
How did Suzaku survive the explosion after the battle with Kallen
How is Suzaku still consumed by Lelouch’s Geass by the end of R1?
Where did theses Knightmare come from?
The show never bothers to explain stuff like this as the show likes to waste on pointless stuff.
5. Sword of Akasha subplot.
This is what fucking happens if you take 13 episode subplot and crammed it in into one episode.
It’s fucking awful and it makes the show a lot worse than it already is.
Not only there was no real build up or foreshadowing but it had a bunch of pretentious dialogue that is cringe-worthy.
Let’s not forget a number of plot holes it has and even an average viewer can easily notice all the plot holes in the stupid subplot. Did I forget the pacing was nothing but horrid as it moves way too fucking fast and by the end of the subplot you will not care at all due to how poorly written and paced it was? Before I close the story selection off I like to say this.

Dead characters that die in a series should stay dead. Seriously did the writers read the Bible of Jesus Yamato or something?

Overall the story of Code Geass R2 is hot garbage. Really hot garbage. Most of the writing in this show felt like a bad fanfic done by a 13-year-old on who had no idea of what he was doing.
The pacing was awful, the tone shifts were unbearable, the plot holes were everywhere and it has some of the worst executed subplots I have ever seen in a anime.
Thankful the ending of Code Geass R2 manages to give us a satisfying end to the series that was well executed but this does not excuse the awful writing in the series.

I honstly have mixed feeling for this cast. In R1 most of the characters were likable and interesting but here some of the previous characters in R1 went from good to either being mediocre or downright bad.
Now normally I would talk about the main character first but here I would like to talk about some of the supporting characters first before we get to the main characters because I have a lot of complaints.
Let’s start with the members of the black knights minus Kallen and Lelouch.

In R1 most of the black knight’s members were kinda likable in they own way and they actually felt like actual soldiers with a goal.
In R2 almost all of the black knight’s members became really unlikeable due to the stupid decisions that they made especially in the second half were in one point of the show they downright betray Zero after they being convinced by schnitzel words.
Okay why you all follow the words of an enemy. Expect to be complete dipshits!!!

Mily and Rivalz. I thought they were fun and characters in the show even tho they were not important in the main story. Also, Mily’s graduation from Ashford Academy is one of the sweeter and better moments in R2.

Shirley. Just I thought this dumb bitch can get any worse this show happens. While it didn’t go into any detail of this character in R1 I wanted to save all of my criticism towards Shirley in R2 because she is by far the worst character in the whole entire series.

Throughout the series, she does nothing but talks about Lelouch. Almost every freaking time.
It’s one thing to be in love but it’s a different thing to only exist to suck on a guy’s dick and to service tension bait for the plot, events, and writing.
She was bad in R1 but this show manages to make her even more insufferable. She is bland, her dialogue is asinine and she’s is an overall bitch of a character who only exists to suck on Lelouch’s dick from start to finish.
Am glad she was killed off in the second half because man I was a happy camper when it happened.
Shirley is a definition of a very poorly written character and I hope the directors and writers of Sunrise will not make a female character like that ever again.

Nina. She is an annoying trashy character who still can’t get over Euphy’s death as well as only existing to cause drama.
I have nothing more to say about this character.

Kallen. What did they do you, Kallen?
In R1 she is a beautiful badass pilot who is likable and had a bit of character development. In R2 the writers were like do you know what let’s take all the development we had for Kallen. Threw it out of the window and turn her into a unlikeable fan-service character who gets kidnapped by the Britannia forces and later just like the Black Knights she ends up joining Britannian side after being convinced by the dipshits that are called the black knights.
I will never understand the writers logic.
You took a character that I loved and has such amazing potential. Killed it shredded to pieces and turn her into a unlikeable bitch who has been reduced to fan-service bait for the horny teenagers out there.

Rolo. I really despise Rolo I really fucking do.
He is an annoying brat who whines a lot. Also, this little shit wanted to kill Lelouch’s Little Sister Nually who keep in mind is blinded fragile disabled girl on a wheelchair. Who the hell write this shit?
In R1 she was an interesting character with a lot of mystery behind her and I overall like her relationship with Lelouch. She mostly stays the same in R2 but after that character reset for short while she has been reused into a fan service object that has lost all memories.

Suzaku. While I kinda liked him in R1 despite him being hypocritical at times. In R2 Suzaku became a recantation of Kira Yamato (Jesus Yamato) (Gundam Seed) complete with his hax plot armor bullshit along with his preachy attitude and hypocritical ideals. Like with Kallen everything that I liked about Suzaku is now thrown out of the window and he devolves into a Gary sue.
I have nothing more to say about this Hypocrital fuck.

Kira 2.0

I honestly have mixed feelings towards Lelouch in R2. While I like him for having good character development in the second half due to set events but at the same time, I really have to question his character ideals and attitude.
Remember in R1 where Lelouch had a more calm and confident attitude and had great ideals that were believable. R2, on the other hand, is more aggressive and more impatient meaning his a lot whinier not to mention his not as consistent as a character compared to his R1 counterpart.
His so called brotherly relationship is honestly retarded
Throughout the series, he had a deep hatred from Rolo and he wanted to kill Rolo. However, after a certain event in the second half of R2 as well as the black knights betraying him he out of nowhere starts caring for Rolo…
I will never understand Lelouch logic whatsoever.

I honestly prefer Lelouch in R1.

Ás for the rest of the characters.
Minus the ones liked in R1 there are pretty forgettable especially the knights of the round.
Overall the characters in R2 are a massive step-down compared to the R1 counterparts.

The visuals of Code Geass are still good as ever. Character movement is still smooth as ever Characters designs still look great and the animation for the mecha battles are still great.
However, there is one thing that really annoyed me about the mecha fights in R2.

The overkill formula. You see the mecha battles in Code Geass R1 had actual strategy and tactics making the mecha battles more fresh and exciting to watch. For some reason, the writers decided to use that stupid overkill formula that we saw from Gundam Seed and Wing and decided to put it into R2.
It honestly makes the mecha battle boring and unexciting to watch as most of the main characters mechas just pop out of nowhere and countless amounts of nightmares with a single shot.

The mecha design pretty much the same as R1 we still have the god awful Sutherland’s and other boring mechs. However, there were some great mecha designs in R2 for key characters such as Suzaku’s Lancelot Albion, Gino’s Tristan Divider and Kallen’s Guren S.E.I.T.E.N. Eight Elements.

One more thing that I like to mention is the fanservice. R1 had fan-service and least in R1 the fan-service was not that distracting as its only exist for comedic moments of the show with a few exceptions. R2 on the other hand no so much. It’s all over the pace even in serious moments of the show and it’s really distracting to watch.

Overall while the visuals of R2 are still good but the mecha battles were very lackluster.

If there was one great thing to come out from R2 is the music. I really like the soundtrack as almost all the tracks were memorable and had a great tone.
The first opening theme 02 is a very catchy song. The second opening theme World End is one of my favorite anime openings ever.
The endings themes are a mixed bag for me. The first ending theme Shiawase Neiro is a good opening theme while the second ending theme Waga Routashi Aku no Hana is a forgettable ending theme.

The sub is good but I personally still prefer the dub as it very well acted for the most part not to mention it has Johnny Young Bosh as Lelouch who does a wonderful job voicing Lelouch.

Final Thoughts.

Man, what a review this has been.
Overall I can say that Code Geass R2 not only a bad anime from Sunrise but it’s just a plain bad anime squeal in general
The story was terribly written, the plot holes were outrageous and most of the characters including the new ones sucked.
The only things that saved Code Geass R2 of being in the same tier as Gundam Seed Destiny, Victory Gundam and Accel Word were the music, visuals, the ending and some of the characters that were in it. Everything else was a trainwreck and it made me wonder what exactly went wrong here.
Fortunately, There is a reason why Code Geass R2 ended up the way it did. Originally Code Geass R2 was meant to be on a midnight timeslot. However, due to fan popularity as well as Gundam 00 Season 2 taking that Saturday midnight slot it was moved to Sunday afternoons at 5pm. That alone explains why the most of the mature content, script, and themes from R1 had to be heavily toned down and it ultimately affected the overall quality of Code Geass R2 especially the first half.
It’s such a shame really because Code Geass R2 had to potential to be great but it ended being a failure as a result.
I hope when it comes for future shows from Sunrise that the directors and writers learn from the mistakes that were made in Code Geass R2
The anime may be popular during its run back in the day but as the old same goes. Popularity does not equal quality and Code Geass R2 is no different.
I hope Code Geass Lelouch of the Resurrection fixes everything that was wrong from Code Geass R2.

I give Code Geas R2 a 3.5/10
Anyway, this was Shawn aka KurataTrigger and I will see you guys next time.

Anime Review 2.5 Code Geass R1.

It was the year 2011 of the normal century. I decided to return to the anime medium after a 2-year break from anime due to me being more interested in video games. I went on the Internet, went on google and typed in best anime of all time on the Google search bar. Then I click on a couple of websites and I saw the anime series called Code Geass as it was placed 1st in many best anime lists. Then decided to check to see if it does deserve that spot of best anime of all time.

So I watched the whole series of Code Geass on some random streaming website for that weekend and I absolutely loved. I loved it so much its literately became my favorite anime series of all time for a good 5 years.

Fast forward to the year 2016 of the normal century where I became a more experienced anime fan who has seen over 800 anime as well buying anime on DVD/Blu-Ray because I wanted to support the anime industry.

It was during that same time where Code Geass would be receiving a follow-up squeal to Code Geass R2 called Code Geass Lelouch of the resurrection.

Now quickly fast forward to early 2017 where I decided to re-watch both seasons of Code Geass for that weekend and well.

Does Code Geass still hold up well after these years?
For this review, I will be reviewing Code Geass R1 and my R2 will be reviewed at a later date.

Hello, everyone, this is Shawn aka KurataTrigger and welcome to my review of Code Geass Lelouch of the Rebellion Season 1 (Code Geass R1) and with that out of the way, let’s started.

So the story of Code Geass is set in an alternate history country area 11 formal known as Japan before getting beaten in a war on the hands of the Holy Britannia Empire.

Our main character Lelouch was once a prince before the assassination of his mother as well being disowned by his father left him and sister going into hiding as a Britannia school somewhere in area 11 with his blinded sister Nunally.

Lelouch pilots his revenge towards the Britannia Empire but everything changes during a chance encounter with terrorists where is given the power of Geass by meeting a strange girl named C.C. The power of the Geass enables Lelouch to give a single command to anyone and they must obey him. It’s during its time Lelouch reunites with his childhood friend Suzaku Kururugi the son of the former Prime Minister of Japan. Now Lelouch must learn his Geass power to carry out his plan of destroying Britannia as he becomes a notorious terrorist known as Zero as well making a terrorist group called the Black Knight who is a group of terrorists who are fighting for the independence of the country so they fight against Britannia forces.

The story for Code Geass is pretty good for the most part.

For starters, I really like how Code Geass R1 is paced. It’s fast and very engaging.

The worldbuilding in Code Geass R1 is very good as it manages to showcase how people are living in war Circumstances in both sides as well as labeling nations as well as distant names to relevant locations in the story.

Also, I liked the overall story direction for the most part as its very entertaining to watch as well has had great moments.
Code Geass does a great job at cliff-hangers has it keeps the audience interested of the show

However, Code Geass is not the best-written show in the world. In fact, Code Geass R1 has some notable flaws in the story department.
One. Tone consistently

The tone of Code Geass can be quite an inconstancy at times especially the middle portion of the show.
Two. The school episodes.

They could have been better written because those episodes feel very cheesy and out of tone not to mention the pacing for those episodes were not that great.
Three. Plotholes.

Code Geass is notorious for its amount plotholes and while the plotholes in R1 is not as bad as it squeal. There were some plotholes in R1 that kinda annoyed me.

Why did Lelouch let Villetta live past the second episode?

How did Lelouch’s phone have Euphemia number even though Lelouch was Euphy enemy?

How did Lelouch manage to plot the other mech perfectly? We never saw him read the menu at all.
Believe me however the plotholes in R1 are tamed compare to the plot holes of its squeal.
The last issue that I had with is episode 22 especially the second half of it.

I won’t mention it here due to spoiler reasons but my god was the moment terribly directed.
Besides these flaws, the story for Code Geass is pretty good for what it is.

The characters in Code Geass are hit or miss depending on your tastes.

For me, I personally enjoyed most of the characters for what they were.

In my opinion Lelouch is one of the best main protagonists I have seen in any anime. He the type of character that you can relate to in a very good way. Not to mention Lelouch has great character development and we do get to see that character development as the series progresses as learns more about that Geass as well as doing cruel but justifiable things towards other people.

While am not a fan of Suzaku I still found him to an interesting character to watch and he was still a pretty enjoyable character at times despite him being hypocritical at times.

C.C is an another interesting character that is enjoyable to watch. She starts off emotionless but as the show progresses she begins to have show more emotions as well as caring more for Lelouch.

I honestly really like Kallen as a character. She’s a beautiful badass fighter for the black knights.

She also develops quite a bit as a character as the show progresses during a certain character arc in R1.

The rest of the characters of Code Geass are also a hit or miss.

This can be very polarizing cast for some.

For me, I liked most of the characters because there fun and very interesting.

For example, I liked characters like Cornelia, Lloyd, Jeremiah, Euphemia, and Milly because I found them to be interesting and very enjoyable

Oh the other I found characters such as Shirley, Nina, and Mao to be very annoying and they actually hurt the show quite a bit

Code Geass Lelouch of the Rebellion was done by Studio Sunrise who also produced other great titles such as Outlaw Star, Gundam series, Cowboy Bebop and Tiger and Bunny and to be honest Code Geass has visually aged well.
For starters Clamp really did an amazing job with the characters designs. They just very well designed and for the most part fit very well with the setting.
The animation for Code Geass R1 is great and smooth and has no stock-footage.

Sadly I cannot say the same thing for mecha designs as most of the mecha designs are very generic and boring to look at especially the grunt suits aka the Sutherland

However, these are three mecha designs that I really like.

These were the Guren Mk-II, Gawain, and the Lancelot.

I liked the design for them as they look really cool and they are very good at combat.

Overall the visuals of Code Geass are very good.

The soundtrack for Code Geass is just great and it really fits with the setting and the theme of Code Geass rather nicely.

One of my favorite tracks in Code Geass is a track called Stories which is one of my favorite track pieces that I heard in any anime
The first opening of Code Geass is easily one of the best things about R1 because it’s so iconic, memorable and not to mention the song itself is great.

The other two openings themes on the other are not so great. I personally found those next two opening to rather bland and they don’t fit well to Code Geass at all.

The ending themes of Code Geass are great as they are very memorable and they fit with the tone of Code Geass very well.
As for voice acting, both the sub and dub are great in they own right as well as being well acted but I prefer the dub due to Johnny Yong Bosh amazing performance as Lelouch.

The rest of the characters sounded great in the dub in my opinion.

Overall the soundtrack is great, the first opening was amazing, both endings are great and both sub and dub are great and well acted.

Final Thoughts.

After 6 years since I watched Code Geass for the first time how does the first season 1 hold up?

For me, Code Geass R1 has aged pretty well.

It has a good engaging story that will keep your edge on your seats, good world-building, good and enjoyable characters especially the main character Lelouch, Great visuals and animation besides the generic mecha design for the Sutherland. Great soundtrack along with a great English dub.

Sure it has issues such some annoying supporting characters as well as having a couple of story issues such as tone shifts for the school episodes to the plotholes but these issues can be ignored due how good the story and characters were for me.
Code Geass will, unfortunately, take a dark turn for the worst as the squeal called Code Geass R2 which by the way won’t have a lot of positive praise from me.

Despite that Code Geass R1 is a great and enjoyable classic in its own right. Not a masterpiece by any means but still a great show in its own right

I give Code Geass R1 a 8/10.

Anyway this was Shawn aka KurataTrigger and I will see you guys next time.

Kurata’s Offical Guide To Gundam.

Do you want to get started with Gundam then you come to the right place, my friend?

The Gundam series is one of the longest running franchise in anime and it’s still going today.

The franchise started on April 7, 1979, as an anime TV series called Mobile Suit Gundam or Gundam 0079 which was revolutionary in that it defined the real robot genre of anime by featuring giant robots in a militaristic war setting.

The popularity of the first TV series and the merchandising that followed spawned a franchise that has come to include works released in numerous media. Titles have appeared in the form of multiple television series and OVAs, movies, manga, novels, and video games. The franchise has also led to the creation of one of the biggest toy and hobby franchises in the Japanese toy industry.

With that all that said and done Hello everyone this is Shawn aka KurataTrigger and welcome to my official Gundam guide.

Universal Century Timeline.

The Universal Century or U.C timeline for Gundam is honestly the best timeline for newcomers to get into Gundam itself. The Universal Century Timeline will give you a proper view of what Gundam is really all about and overall it’s the most professionally made Gundam Timeline out of everything that is Gundam. And when you eventually make your way into Alternate Universes of Gundam that are Outside the Universal Century, you will be able to spot key elements that were adapted *from* the Universal Century Timeline in Other Gundam Universes as well.

The Universal Century timeline of Gundam consists of multiple anime to watch.

You can watch the U.C Gundam in this order

Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin (Still airing)

Mobile Suit Gundam 0079 TV series or Movie Trilogy

Mobile Suit Gundam 08th M8 Team OVA

Mobile Suit Gundam 0080 War in The Pocket OVA

Mobile Suit Gundam 0083 Stardust Memory OVA

Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam TV

Mobile Suit ZZ Gundam (Skip episode 1 and go straight to episode 2 because episode 1 is just a recap of 0079 and Zeta Gundam)

Mobile Suit Gundam Char ‘Counterattack Movie

Gundam Thunderbolt.

Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn OVA or Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn RE:0096 TV series.

Mobile Suit Gundam F91 Movie

Mobile Suit Victory Gundam

Gundam Reconguista in G

Turn A Gundam

Out of all of the Gundam shows in the Universal Century timeline, there are some things to note with 3 Gundam anime from the U.C Timeline.

The first is being ZZ Gundam. Zeta Gundam is a very cruel and dark Gundam anime especially in the last quarter of the show. ZZ Gundam, however, takes the usual style of Gundam and does a complete 180 with it.the series became dark in the end.

However, the second half is much darker.

I personally found ZZ Gundam to quite decent.

The Next one is F91 which was meant to be a TV series due to Bandai saying no to Tomino he was forced to make it as a movie instead of a 50 episode TV series.

Sadly the movie was too short for its own good and they became a rushed mess. Go read the manga and don’t bother witha F91 movie at all.

Mobile_Suit_Victory_Gundam0 (1)

The third one is Victory Gundam.

You thought Zeta Gundam was dark Victory Gundam is very dark and brutal from start to finish with characters dying left and right in almost every episode.

To be honest I consider Victory Gundam to be the weakest U.C show because while the first half was pretty entertaining and enjoyable the second half starting from episode 29 is awful. Bad looking visuals, characters die left or right no reason, most of the characters became annoying mainly the females and creepy and it has some of the worst written/direction I have ever seen in my life (*Cough end of Episode 38*) I highly recommend avoiding watching that show unless you want to get depressed or even offended.

An example of Victory Gundam atrocious writing in the second half.

Alternatively, once you finish watching Unicorn and Thunderbolt go watch Turn A and G Reco instead of F91 or Victory.  You will thank me later.

Only watch Victory Gundam once you finish the rest of the U.C Gundam shows minus Turn A and G Reco.

One more thing Gundam Recongutsia in G has a large time skip from the end of Victory. Taking place over 800 Years past Victory, and way after the Universal Century Timeline itself came to an end. But it is still very much canon to the events of the Universal Century, and this is made very apparent with what happens in the series. But with this anime, in particular, you have to make sure to PAY VERY CLOSE ATTENTION to the dialogues and what is going on. If you miss even a single bit of dialogue, it is very easy to get lost in the story. But thankfully, the story does become easier to follow as the anime progresses. But I’m just warning you about it now, in advanced. I personally liked G Reco for what it is.

In short start off with Mobile Suit Gundam 0079, and make your way down the list as you finish that anime and move onto the next one, all the way to G Reco.

Now once you get through all of that, you may ask: “Wow! So….where do I go next?”

Once you finish up the Universal Century Timeline (and G-Reco), you are then able to check out all of the Alternate Universes (A.U) and Spin-Off Series that exist in the Gundam Metaverse as well. These Alternate Universes and Spin-Off Series have absolutely nothing to do with the Universal Century Timeline; story wise. But they are heavily inspired and derive a lot of their source material off of things from the Universal Century. To be honest, after you finish up the U.C. Timeline, you’re pretty much a free bird meaning you can watch any Alternative Universe Gundam show you want without any problems.

The best A.U show that I highly recommend checking out as your first A.U Gundam show is 00 it’s easily the best mainstream Gundam series out there.

The four mainstream Gundam shows out so far are its follows.

Gundam 00.

Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans.

Gundam Seed.

Gundam Wing.

Gundam 00 takes place in the Anno Domini Timeline; which is currently the timeline we live in right now, except way into the future. The interesting thing is, the Universal Century Timeline also at one point took place in Anno Domini before it became “Universal Century”. It’s said to be between 2055 and 2134 or something like that. Gundam 00, however, is in the year 2300’s. So, that’s Hundreds of Years past anything Universal Century had.

There are some things that you should consider while watching Gundam 00.

To start off-season 1 of 00 was just great from start to finish. It had great theme exploration of war and the characters, world building, and visuals were just amazing.

00 S2 is good for what it was but wasn’t at the same level as season 1 of 00. You will most likely notice this from your watch though since most 00 fans acknowledge this openly.

There is a Gundam 00 Movie Sequel “Awakening of the Trailblazer” which you should skip at all cost due to how lackluster it was. 00 fans really don’t like that movie.

Next, we have Gundam Wing which has a very interesting fanbase and to be honest.

Gundam Wing is kinda overrated in my opinion.

Gundam Wing is kinda of a decent Gundam by itself but it had problems such a bad pacing, in the beginning, the wing boys are barely 2 dimensional, has a lot of stock footage and it had that stupid overkill formula.

Even tho I give Gundam Wing a 4/10 in my review I still recommend this title for anyone who wants to a watch a Gundam show from the 90s. You might like it and enjoy it but as for me, I wasn’t a fan of Wing.

(Updated I give Gundam Wing a 6/10 despite its problems that I have with it).

It has a squeal called Gundam Wing Endless Waltz which improves a lot of things from the TV series but it still had its fair share of flaws.

Next, we have Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans which just finished airing in 2017 with 2 seasons.

Iron-Blooded Orphans has recently gained the love or hate reputation by many Gundam fans from the respective fan-bases.  Some say it’s a great entry to the Gundam franchise other say it was a train-wreck.

For me, Iron-Blooded Orphans is a pretty good entry to the Gundam franchise. While I prefer 00 over it Iron-Blooded Orphans still a solid Gundam show in my opinion. It has its problems such as confusing world building in the earlier parts of S1, the second half of S2 was kinda rushed and not all of the characters were properly fleshed out.

Iron-Blooded Orphans in my opposition is a fun and an enjoyable Gundam show.

What about Gundam Seed. Is that show even worth watching at all? Yes and no.

Why do I say this?

Well, you see Gundam Seed as well as the cosmic timeline has a notorious reputation from many Gundam fans for being a mess that has many problems such as lots of stock footage, very hit or miss characters and meh mecha designs that sometimes can be unoriginal etc.

The first Gundam Seed is not a masterpiece or awful it’s just above average that has great moments every now and them but it has its issues. I personally give Seed S1 a 6/10 and as it’s my guilty pleasure Gundam show.

However, I cannot say the same thing about its squeal which is called the Forbidden Gundam show by many Gundam fans myself included and that show is Gundam Seed Destiny.

Am going to be straight honest with you know Gundam Seed Destiny is easily the worst Gundam show that has ever been released so far. It has a tonnes of problems such as meanless war, awkward tone shifts,, an unlikable MC who goes by the name of Shin Asuka who is always angry, has emotional problems and has idiotic ideas that make no sense at all, has more stock footage than freaking scooby doo and the show has the most unoriginal Gundam designs ever made. Looking at you Destiny Gundam.

You’re only going to a massive headache while watching it If you’re curious about it, you can check it out but watch it with friends with the HD remaster version or the Movies because watching this alone is a really painful experience that no one should suffer through by themselves.

Lucky There is One Gem out of the Cosmic Era that got itself a 3 Episode OVA called Gundam SEED Stargazer C.E.73. This is probably the Best Anime Adaptation so far that the Cosmic Era has ever received. When Gundam Seed & mainly Gundam Seed Destiny did so many things *wrong*, Stargazer did so many things *right* that it’s like you’re almost watching a completely different Gundam Series entirely! I seriously wish it was more than just 3 Episodes, I want to see MORE out of it! That’s how much I enjoyed it! And I’m willing to bet that you will too.

Gundam X is a good Gundam show that I highly recommend to anyone despite being cut down to 39 episodes due to poor ratings in Japan. Gundam X is basically a “What-If” Universal Century Timeline and takes a lot of elements from the U.C. Timeline and kinda changes them around in its own way. It’s not part of the official U.C. Timeline in any way, shape, or form. But it re-imagines it from a different perspective, and in a damn good way!

Mobile Fighter G Gundam, may be an Oddball of the Gundam Franchise as its more of a super robot shounen anime intend of a war but do you know what G Gundam is freaking amazing and epic from start to finish with great and lovable characters that will grow on you as the series progresses and the battles and soundtrack is great and exciting. As long as you don’t take it that seriously, you will probably end up Loving this one.

Like with Gundam Seed Gundam AGE is a controversial Gundam show. I wouldn’t recommend looking at that one until you’re more into Gundam. AGE being one of your 1st Gundam Animes is a very bad idea, cuz that will give you an even more False View on what Gundam is all about.  Despite that Gundam AGE is a decent Gundam where it only becomes great in the AGE GEN 2 arc. However, Gundam AGE kinda falls apart in the last 10 episodes as it’s almost as bad as Seed Destiny. The first 2 arcs are good and very enjoyable to watch while Gen 3 arc is mediocre at best.

Lastly, we have the Gundam Build Fighters saga.

This one I would not recommend checking out until you’ve gotten very familiar with Gundam as a whole, and are well aware of Mobile Suits, references and Characters from all series beforehand. This whole saga is just nothing but a massive love-letter to the entirety of the Gundam Franchise.

In terms of quality, The first season of Build Fighters Absolutely FANTASTIC in almost every way possible has great characters, amazing visuals, great mecha battles that use a lot of strategy and tactics for Gunpla battles, racing etc.

Personally, this is my 2nd favorite non-U.C Gundam show as being in my 4th favorite Gundam show of all time.

Build Fighters Try not so much.

I don’t hate it on anything but compared to S1 it’s a massive step down in a lot of areas. It’s not Seed Destiny, the second half of Victory, F91 or 00 movie levels of bad but when compared to S1 it’s kinda disappointing. On its own it’s a decent Gundam show that it has great moments every now and then but it couldn’t keep up to the greatness that is from S1.

Just like G Gundam. Do not take them seriously. Hell, they don’t even take THEMSELVES seriously. So why should you? Just wanted to clarify that last thing there, because there actually are idiots out there who hated Build Fighters and Try because they made the stupid mistake of actually trying to take them seriously.

You can buy the Gundam Blu-Ray/DVDs on theses following websites.

Anime Review 1.3 Gundam Build Fighters Try ( Remastered)

The first season of Gundam Build Fighters is amazing because I never expected Gundam Build Fighters too,, be good in the slightest because of growing my bitterness too,, the children anime in general.
It had a great simple story with great writing, amazing characters, wonderful art/animation and the soundtrack was just a masterpiece of art.

The first season of Gundam Build Fighters are personally one of my favourite Gundam shows period

When I saw Gundam Build Fighters Try for the first I expected too,, be almost as great as the first season of Gundam Build Fighters.
If only that was true.
Hello everyone Shawn/ aka KurataTrigger and I will be reviewing the squeal too,, the sleeper hit Gundam Build Fighters Gundam Build Fighters Try. Are this show worth the watch let’s find out.

The story are almost literally the same as the first season expect it feels more dumped down this time.
Why you make ask?
Well for starters the writing in this season are clearly not that good because remember the amazing humour that the first season had. Well the first season type of humour are gone and it’s replace with meh humour at best too,, cringe-worthy humour at worst.
Secondly this season feels more like a battle shounen more than a hobby that people can enjoy equally because the rivals in the season behave more like a generic villains that just wants power for they own deeds.
That’s alone hurts the characterisation for this cast and it’s really a shame that writers went for a shounen route this time. The first season had its shounen moments but it was less notable due too,, the great character interactions and strategies that happens in the first season.
Also the battles are all predictable and boring because in S1 theyre was a lot of strategies in the fight and also the battles were almost non predictable. In Try however fights are boring, unexciting and too,, add insult too,, injury they are a bunch of Deus Ex Machina now meaning whenever team try fighters are in a hopeless situation Sekai Gunpla will magically get stronger just too,, advance the plot.
I have admit that some of the fights were hype but the hype factor was negated due to god awful plot armour and Deus Ex Machinas that the Team Try Fighters have.
Lastly the whole theme of enjoying the hobby gets thrown out of the freaking window due to a certain character who literally has no passion or interest of the hobby gunpla.
Overall the story of Build Fighters Try was terrible.

If I have to describe the character cast in a nutshell it would be wasted potential and very poorly written.

Sekai is a terrible main lead who is basically a bootleg Reiji with hardly any reddening values whatsoever.
I will admit he was kinda tolerable in the first few episodes but as the show progressed and once we got to the tournament arc of Try. He devolves into a hot headed Gary Sue. Not gonna a lie.
One thing that I hated about Sekai is how he didn’t care about the hobby of gunpla.
All he wants to do is get in the battlefield and spam he’s Jigen Haoh School moved towards his opponents without giving a second thought about his teammates as well as his own gunpla.
Overall I really don’t like Sekai at all.
Next we have Fumina…
What the hell did you do to this character Sunrise?
Fumina starts off being a potential great female lead because she are a team leader and she was a strong combatant for the first couple of fights.
As the series however literally becomes a supporting character because reasons?
What really pissed me of about this Fumina are ever since she became a supporting character she started doing retarded shit like being a half ass tsundere, joins Sekai ‘s harem and the final nail of the coffin for Fumina are she literally got nerfed too,, death meaning she are more weak than any supporting characters in the first season. That are just sad.
In general Fumina are just perfect example of a wasted potential character.

1030 Yuuma Kousaka

You thought Fumina was missed potential Yuuma is literally a badly written character.
He’s boring, pretentious, uninteresting and he’s are really a poor man’s Sei, Not too,, mention Yumma sup plot are just terrible because you won’t believe this wonderful writing The main reason why he’s depressed and stop playing altogether Gunpla because somebody beat him in a Gunpla battle.
Let’s say that again. The main reason why he’s depressed and stopped playing Gunpla altogether because somebody beat him in a Gunpla battle.
What’s even worst about this he’s stopped playing Gunpla because of humiliation not because of an illness or family issues and by the way those are perfect sup plot sets for this character but no we get a poorly written revenge story instead because we haven’t got enough of those stories right.
Overall Yuuma are a terrible character.

The rest of the characters are also not that good.
In fact the side characters in TRY hurt the anime more than the story and the main characters because the side characters here are just really bad.
Don’t get me started how comical the rivals here because they don’t have any passion for the gunpla battle whatsoever and most of them are doing it for the money, some school pride or some business shit.
Don’t get me started with the whole harem thing with Sekai with the three girls.
Also the character interactions were just bad and at times cringe-worthy.

Overall the characters in Gundam Build Fighters Try were really bad and the show biggest fault by a long shot.

Best girl and only good character by a long shot

Oveall the characters in Gundam Build Fighters Try were really bad and the show biggest fault by a long shot.

The first season of Build Fighters has great looking visuals as well as great animation that hardly has any stock footage. I cannot say the same about the animation.
The visuals have stayed the same from season 1 however I feel the character can go a bit too off model at times not to mention some of the character reactions are just downright cringe-worthy.

As for actual animation I honestly thought the animation for Try was a massive step down as half of the fights were choppy as hell as well as having a lot of stock footage especially in the tournament arc where the stock footage became almost as bad as Seed Destiny’s Stock Footage. Am not even joking

stockThe only good thing about the visuals are the mecha designs which I found most of the them to be pretty cool.

Overall the visuals of Try were a big step down from season 1

The OST itself are good for what it was but compare too,, the first season its not that great and it times it can be forgettable.
I can hardly remember a single track from the ost at all and this really sad because the first season ost are one of my favourite ost in anime.
The first opening Cerulean by BACK-ON are a good song and it really fits into the show really well and it’s also one best parts of Gundam Build Fighters Try. It’s catchy as hell and its a good listen
The second opening Just Fly Away by EDGE of LIFE are also a good song but compare too,, the first opening its just okay and its feels more like a ending theme in my opinion.
Even tho Gundam Build Fighters Try has 2 good openings its simply can’t complete with the first season opening 2 wimp ft. Lil’Fang (from FAKY) by BACK-ON because one the song had its own charm and secondly it was catchy and lastly the song was pure hype.

The first ending theme Amazing The World by SCREEN mode are a great song and its easily the best ending theme from the Gundam Build Fighters series.
The second ending theme Mayomayo Compass wa Iranai by StylipS are a okay ending theme. Nothing more nothing less.

At this time of the Gundam Build Fighters Try has a dub and too,, be honest with you. The dub are decent nothing in more nothing less
If you had a choice of sub or dub I would say stick with the sub unless you like watching dubbed anime such as myself.

Final Thoughts.

Wasted Potential are easily the best way to describe Gundam Build Fighters Try as a whole.
It’s has terrible characterisation, pretentious sub plots, weak story, very predictable fights that have contains lots of plot armour and deus ex machina, a borderline forgettable ost, stupid harem and its ultimately unsatisfying at the end.

On its own its a bad Gundam title but if you compare it to the well written first season its a train-wreck.
It takes away the fun of the first season and actually takes away a lot of the charm of the first season and it’s really a shame.
But hey least its better than Gundam Wing and Gundam Seed Destiny

I give Gundam Build Fighters Try a 4/10

Anyway this has been Shawn aka KurataTrigger and I will see you guys next time.

Build Fighters Try was such a disappointment for me yo!!!! Least it’s better than Wing yo!!!

Quick update.

Am planning to do more re-mastered versions of my reviews because one I wan’t to fix my mistakes from the original version of my reviews such as grammar, outdated information and  and two I wan’t to re-review them again with a updated opinion for those shows

I won’t do it for every show but I will do it for a few shows

Gundam Build Fighters Season 1 and Outlaw Star re-mastered reviews coming soon.

Anime Review 2.1 Mobile Suit Gundam Wing.

If you are a fan of Gundam Wing you may not like this review.
Am going too,, go ahead and judge Gundam Wing for what it are and not base of nostalgia love that I use too,, have.
Also keeps this on mind I was one of those kids whom grew up with Wing and loved it. Also I didn’t complete the series when I was a kid because at the time period Gundam Wing was slowly disappearing out of Cartoon Network along with Outlaw Star and Cowboy Bebop so I never finished the show back then but for what I saw in Gundam Wing I love it.
Many years later many people that I know recommended me too,, watch this show again because I didn’t finish it back then. Then I decided too,, watch it from start too,, finish and well am going too,, be real honest with you all.
I don’t think Gundam Wing are as awesome as I thought it was. Infect I actually think it’s one of the worst Gundam shows. Why do I think its one of the worst Gundam shows you will find out this review?
Hello everyone this are Shawn aka TheSanaTrigger and welcome to my review of Gundam Wing and with out of the way let’s gets started.

It is the year after colony 195. The earth alliance along with OZ and the Romefeller Foundation are in total control of the five colonies and space too,, fight back against them the colony scientist commence operation meter and sends five young mobile suits pilots too,, fight for independence. The five young pilots being Heero Yuy, Duo Maxwell, Trowa Barton, Quatre Raberba Winner and Chang Wufei. Throughout the series the five must battle the best that OZ has to offer including the leader Trace Khushrenada and the right hand man Zechs Marquise.
Now I have some good things to say about Gundam Wing story but at the same time a lot of bad things.
The story of Gundam Wing are what you expect from a Gundam show. The colonies are being oppressed by a powerful faction and are now declaring independence. However as the series progresses we are introduced too,, new elements and plot twists too,, make the story feel fresh. I thought some story elements were kinda enjoyable to watch. The themes and messages in Gundam Wing are much simplified compare to other Gundam shows including the universal century timeline which I personally didn’t mind the themes and messages being more simple but what really irritated me about its the messages and themes presented in wing are rather preachy with certain characters in the show spouting pacifistic nonsense with no substance whatsoever.

The pacing in Gundam Wing are horrendously bad where the first half has the pacing of a generic slice of life anime while the pacing in the second half has improved a bit I already feel tired of the show mainly due how slow going it was the majority of the series. Turn A Gundam may have slow pacing at the beginning but least with Turn A actually builds up its themes, has great world building, character building and has great story setup. Gundam Wing doesn’t have any of that. In fact the worldbuilding and story setup are pretty pathetic.
Gundam Wing story also has tedious political battle and the stupid and annoying narrator always dumpling heavy political information on our heads expecting us too,, take it all in. IT’S NOT GOOD STORYTELLING. It’s just painfully tedious too,, listen and its puts the viewer too,, sleep myself included.
Overall the story of Gundam Wing had too,, potenal too,, be good but it fails in almost every way possible.

The characters in Gundam wing range from decent to awful.
The wing boys all have dimensional personalities. Heroo and Trowa are youre generic silent but deadl guys, Duo are the happy go lucky buffoon, Quatre are a kind pacifistic pretty boy and Wufei are a hot headed warrior. Now besides from Duo which I personally liked and I thought he was a fun and entertaining character to watch. The Wing boys are poorly written and unlikable from start to finish. Heero and Trowa are some of the blandest characters I have ever seen in any anime. They are boring, static, they hardly developed as characters and most importantly they are pretentious as hell to the point where I started to cringe of how edgy they are.
I personally like Quatre in the beginning but as the series progresses he became kinda of a pretentious character in themes of his pacifism ideals not to mention he became really unlikable in the second half.
Wufei are easily my least favourite of the wing boys. He are whiny, pretentious, poorly written to the core and not to mention he’s personally and ideals honestly made me sick. He’s the most forgettable character in the show because he barely does anything in the show apart from being a pretentious brat.

Now if you thought Wufei was an annoying pretentious brat Relena takes the cake for being one of the worst characters in Gundam. She always preaches about peace and pacifism and failing too,, realizing that war cannot end by preaching about peace all the time not to mention her motivations are downright stupid and annoying. Relena is easily the worst thing about Gundam Wing.
Also Relena’s obsession and romance with Heero are one of the stupidest love stories I have seen in any anime mostly because it isn’t clear how Heero feels and the romance itself was completely pointless in a long whil.e

Zechs are easily my second favourite character in the show because unlike 4/5 of the Wing boys he’s actually a good and entertaining character too,, watch.
Lastly we have Treize who is my favourite character in Wing. Like with Zechs he’s a good character in own right and have more substance than any of the wing boys and Relena not too,, mention he a good villain for a Gundam show.
As for the side characters were okay at best.
Overall besides from Zecha, Treize and Duo all of the characters range from average to downright awful.

The visuals of Gundam Wing are outdated and have aged poorly. Theyre a lot of choppy animation and inconstant art and the anime that came out in 90s this are honestly unacceptable because I seen better looking 90s anime like Escaflowne, Outlaw Star, After War Gundam, Cowboy Bebop and even G Gundam to a certain degree.
Also many of the characters designs look outdated and lack any detail.
Also most of the battles of Gundam Wing lack impact and substance because of two major flaws that am going mention now.
First up the overkill formula.

Gundam Wing was the first Gundam title too,, introduce the overkill formula where all the Gundams are all invincible throughout most of the battles with the grunt suits and it’s the challenges feel pointless until they go against mobile suits counted by main characters in the story.
The one thing that I pissed me off too,, no end are portrayal of the Gundams. A great Gundam battle for me are where it’s balanced with both sides struggling too,, come out for top. Not a mindless one sided beat down with the Gundams simply crushing down grunts suits like ants and flies.

Secondly the Stock Footage.

zOQArQM.gifOh my god they are tons and tons of stock footage use for the battles in the series. It honestly makes the battles really repetitive and downright boring to watch. It’s almost as bad as Gundam Seed and Gundam Shin Destiny am not kidding when I say that.
If they was a good thing I can say about Wing visuals are its variety of combat setting and the wing boy’s mecha designs.
The combat setting in Wing are unique as some of the battle will take place like the desert, forest and a city.
As for the Gundam themselves I really liked the designs as well the unique weapons that they have.
I really can’t say the same about the OZ grunts suits because they designs are horrendously bad. I honestly can’t blame them.
The Gundams are portrayed really poorly here. However the Tallgeese design are good for what it are but I seen much better Gundam designs from other Gundam series.
Overall the visuals in Gundam Wing are lacklustre.

The soundtrack are good but it’s mostly stranded and kinda forgettable most of the time.
The first opening Just Communication are good opening but they are better Gundam openings out theyre. The same can be said for Rhythm Emotion aka opening two.
The ending theme It’s Just Love are a mediocre and forgettable ending theme

Now for dub or sub.

Now I only watched Gundam Wing in dubbed but I seen bits of the sub
This are going too,, be an unpopular opinion but the dub in Gundam Wing are outdated and terrible.
A bunch of miscasts, bad audio quality and not too,, mention theyre are too,,, many bad performance especially the side characters.
Lastly the whole IT’S A GUNDAM thing in the dub are honestly one of the most stupidest things I ever heard. It’s so cheesy, over dramatic and not too,, mention it’s downright annoying when the grunts usually say that just before they are killed.
The dub of G Gundam may be cheesy but least it had its charm. The dub for Gundam Wing has no charm and it’s stiff as hell.
Honestly if you want to watch Gundam Wing stick with the sub because the dub has aged poorly.

Final thoughts.

Here we have it Gundam Wing are not the best Gundam series out theyre. I really want like Gundam Wing more than I did because I liked it when I was a kid but now I simply cannot ignore its flaws.
The story are a poorly written mess, the pacing and world building are terrible, the characters range from decent too,, downright awful, visuals have aged poorly, the stock footage are out of control, the Gundams are portrayed really badly and the soundtrack are not that memorable in the slightest.

It’s not the worst thing in the world but I still think it’s one of the worst Gundam series that I seen. Theyre are far better Gundam shows than Gundam Wing like G Gundam, After War Gundam X, any of the U.C Gundam shows, Turn A Gundam, Gundam Build Fighters S1 and its squeal Gundam Build Fighters Try.
As much I wasn’t a fan of Gundam Build Fighters Try in the terms of story and characterisation it was an enjoyable Gundam title it its own right and had its own charm.
Gundam Wing has none of that.
Outside of Nostalgia Gundam Wing has aged terribly.

If you want too,, watch Gundam Wing than more power too,, you. If you liked the series than good for you but overall Gundam Wing are an over-hyped 90s series that tries too,, tell its own war story but fails in almost every way possible.
I give Gundam Wing a 4/10

Anyway this has been Shawn aka TheSanaTrigger and I will see you guys next time were I review Turn A Gundam.
